We are seeking an experienced, motivated and values-driven leader to join our team as Pou Amotake – North Taranaki Visitor Centre Operations Manager.


This is a unique opportunity to lead the establishment and ongoing operation of the new North Taranaki Visitor Centre, a significant destination that will connect visitors with Te Atiawa, Taranaki Maunga, and the wider region.


Reporting to the Pou Iho Tū – General Manager Economic Development and Operations, you will play a pivotal role in bringing the Visitor Centre to life, leading pre-opening activities, developing operational systems, building a high-performing team, and delivering an exceptional visitor experience grounded in Te Atiawa values and culture.


Overview

Te Tūranga (the role)

The core responsibilities of the role include:

  • Leading the pre-opening setup and operational readiness of the North Taranaki Visitor Centre.
  • Developing and implementing operational systems, procedures, budgets, and service standards.
  • Managing day-to-day operations across the café, conference and event facilities, wānanga and education programmes, and visitor services.
  • Delivering an exceptional, culturally grounded manuhiri experience that showcases Te Atiawa and Taranaki.
  • Recruiting, leading, and developing a high-performing team.
  • Building strong relationships with hapū, community partners, tourism operators, government agencies, and key stakeholders.
  • Managing external contractors, suppliers, and service providers.
  • Leading health and safety across all operations and ensuring compliance with organisational and legislative requirements.
  • Driving continuous improvement, visitor satisfaction, utilisation, and commercial performance.
  • Supporting the long-term success of the Visitor Centre as a leading cultural and tourism destination.


Requirements

We're looking for someone who:

  • Has senior leadership experience in tourism, hospitality, events, venue management, or a related sector.
  • Has successfully established, opened, or scaled a new tourism, hospitality, or visitor-focused venture.
  • Demonstrates strong people leadership, coaching, and team-building capabilities.
  • Has exceptional organisational and operational management skills.
  • Can confidently manage multiple priorities, stakeholders, and projects simultaneously.
  • Has excellent relationship management skills and can engage effectively with whānau, hapū, community organisations, government agencies, and commercial partners.
  • Has a strong understanding of Te Atiawa kōrero tuku iho, tikanga, and te reo Māori.
  • Is passionate about creating memorable visitor experiences and contributing to the aspirations of Te Atiawa.
  • Is resilient, solutions-focused, and committed to continuous improvement.

Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa (Te Kotahitanga) is the post settlement governance entity (PSGE) for Te Atiawa Iwi located in Taranaki. Established by the Trust Deed in 2014, Te Kotahitanga is responsible for managing Te Atiawa treaty settlement assets for the benefit of iwi members.
